Faith is a choice; so is doubt. Doubt is based on fear; faith is based on something substantially more promising. Faith is believing and acting on the belief that what God says is the final word. He doesn’t ghost us, flake out, or go back on His Word. He is 100% trustworthy.
We can get ourselves in trouble when we try to put words in his mouth. He never promised a life without trouble, but he does promise to be with us through difficulties. Some people, disappointed that God didn’t just erase their problems, “lose faith.” However, their faith was in their demands, not in God Almighty or his legitimate promises.
Choosing faith means to 1. Know God exists, and 2. Know he rewards those who diligently seek him. Seeking God himself is different and far superior to seeking the answers we want.
He does promise much! We can choose to relax in these promises or get out of sorts when things do not go our way. Psalm 33:4 For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.
Promises for…
The Church – Luke 8:21 Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”
Romans 9:8 This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children.
Ephesians 2:18-20 Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
Children – Psalm 27:10 Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.
Orphan – Psalm 68:5 Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy.
Widows/divorced – Isaiah 54:5 For your Creator will be your husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth.
Frightened – Psalm 91:14-16 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.
Brokenhearted – Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.
Abandoned – Deuteronomy 31:6 So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.
Hebrews 13:5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
Lonely – Psalm 68: 6 God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.
These are a few of the hundreds of promises to be found in the Bible. Our emotions tell us we want or need a certain answer, when in fact, God knows best. If this sounds like a platitude, maybe it is because you have not yet chosen faith above your wishes.
Part of insanity is being torn between two extremes. Peace comes when we let go of our will and put our faith in His.
