A therapist I met at a convention approached the idea of identity. He turned to me and asked, “Who are you?” I said my name and he followed up with, “Who are you?”

This cycle was repeated several times with my answers varying. He was surprised after about 6 or 7 repetitions, that I still had answers. He expected that like most people, he said, I would not know how to answer after three.

My answers, “Nancy; mother; Christian; writer; advocate; and creative” did not seem difficult. It saddened me that most people cannot go that far in identifying themselves.

Well, here’s a cheat sheet. Who are you? In God’s eyes, you are:

Loved: God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins (1 John 4:9-10).

Wanted: Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).

Created with purpose: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10 niv).

Sought: For the Son of Man [Jesus] came to seek and save those who are lost (Luke 19:10 brackets mine).

Died for: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

Priceless: You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God (Psalm 139:13-17).
