The Bible offers an idea: Fix your thoughts.
“Fix” means to focus and not get thrown by every wind of thought that pops into our heads (Ephesians 4:14). Philippians 4: 8 reads, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
The opposite of honorable is lies, rumors that produce gossip, and false negative assumptions. The opposite of right is simply wrong.
We fill our minds with all kinds of falsehoods when we do not ask appropriate questions. Is this true? Did someone make it up? It is said to follow the money if you want to find the source of made-up facts. Someone is getting something out of spreading the rumors. Follow the power, too. Even an ordinary person could be seeking to be the one in the know; it makes them feel powerful (John 7:18).
Being gullible is not a character strength. It is not a spiritual blessing. We are told to be alert, wise as serpents but innocent as doves (Matthew 10:16). Everyone should speak truth to his neighbor. Most frightening of all is that God hates liars and lies (Proverbs 6:16-19; Revelation 21:8). Do you really want to be part of that?
Honorable is what builds up and not tears down. It is speaking of the benefit of the doubt rather than negative guessing. It is honorable to focus on what someone does well rather than their mistakes.
What is right is not wrong, not wrong in facts, not wrong to do or say, and not against the will of God.
Fix your thoughts on what is honorable and right. I believe you will experience less anxiety, anger, and frustration.
