It is not a moral question whether murder is evil. Murder is a moral depravity, a reckless disregard for sacred life, and it is wrong. Murder is the taking of another’s life when your life or someone else’s is not in danger. It is not self-defense, war, or an accident. Murder is taking advantage of another’s vulnerability and snuffing out their light and potential. The murder of children is especially heinous because they do not have the power to fight back.

Clancy’s deeds were premeditated, as is obvious from her preparations. Mentally ill people are not rational, and rational preparations do not fit the definition of ill. Clancy was sane and homicidal, and the attempt on her own life was part of that mindset. The same is true of mass killers who die by suicide after their deeds. These are not suicidal people acting out- these are homicidal people who no longer care.

Moral responsibility must be built into our character so that if we face temptation, we know to say no. One can cross a sense of right versus wrong, but it should be difficult, and let’s face it, the fear of God needs to be in place. Character is built in childhood and grows into adulthood. Jesus makes people different than what they once were, and a relationship with him can change everything.

People under depression’s influence may act out in various ways contrary to their values. Depression can strip you of inhibition. But depression does not empty your mind of character. Under depression, we can still choose to be the person we want to be.

Nothing will bring the children back. Clancy’s imprisonment or death will not amend the situation. As a society, we cannot allow the pity of a few to override the common sense of the law. These children died by murder; something Lindsay Clancy could have stopped at any point when she first began to think about it.
