Why do we sing, and even expect talk of peace on earth at Christmas? There is only one reason: when Jesus returns, He will bring peace on earth. Christmas is a celebration of his first coming, and we eagerly await his second.
He is going to destroy, or allow to be destroyed, the earth and sky as we know them. At the same time, there will be a place many call “heaven” prepared and ready for those who believe on His name. Eventually (and I am not sure when), He will create a new heaven and earth to share with us for eternity.
That is why I sing about peace on earth at Christmastime. Many of our anxieties relate to the unknown, but I know. Worries about this life and if it is going well can swamp our minds. But this is not the only life. Whatever goes wrong today is nothing compared to the glories and wonders of our eternal home.
Does this knowledge prevent stress? In many ways, it does. However, life is still to be lived here, and sometimes that brings pain. Hope is based on relying on God’s love and His promises, expecting our eternal future, and walking closely with Him.
Do you want to know peace on earth? Would it be exciting to see your worst anxieties melt away? He gives us rest when our minds are steadfast on Him. Confess your sins, ask Jesus to forgive you, and start looking for ways to grow your faith (church, Bible study, prayer).

Today’s Helpful Word
John 1:12-14
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
