The man grimaced with worry. “But God cannot trust me”, he said. This, after confessing to how he believed he had failed God.
His sentiment was sadly familiar, and the words were verbatim to what I once said to a pastor. It was my pleasure to repeat the powerful truth that set me free.
“Of course, God cannot trust you. He cannot trust any of us. He alone is completely trustworthy, and that is why He gives us mercy and grace.”
It takes some pondering to let that sink in. Many of us beat ourselves silly, thinking we have to somehow honor God with our perfection. God is not looking for perfection; He is looking for our hearts. Will we trust Him?
If we were to stand next to an airliner, we would look and feel small. We could never apply enough effort to become so huge. It is similar when we compare ourselves to God’s holiness. He is far beyond our equal. We cannot reach His level of perfection, love, mercy, justice, or peace. Everything he does is part of a much bigger picture that we do not clearly conceive.
Because we cannot be the same as Him, we always fall short. That means each of us sins (falls short) merely by being human. He wants our hearts, our faith, and our desire to follow His ways.
And that is where salvation begins, with faith. It is a choice, a work of our wills to decide to follow Jesus. He provides everything else we need. No one turns to Jesus unless the Holy Spirit draws him or her; it is important to not ignore that tug.
We honor God with simple faith, repentance from sin (not only “sorry” but changing), and obedience (imperfect though it will be). If we follow Jesus, we are God’s beloved. He will do whatever it takes to complete the work He has begun in us. “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (Philippians 2:13).
