Did you know that some people live with suicidal thoughts EACH day even though they are fine otherwise? Not seriously depressed, and not seeking death, these people have kept suicide in their back pocket as an option. This may be a habit or conscious decision; some may be because they do not know how to have a healthy perspective on life.
This is why it is foolish to wrap people into one demeaning group such as “weak” or “violent.” In my personal opinion based on those I have spoken with and personal experience, suicide is impulsive at the moment but often follows years of “staying strong.” I remember Robin Williams telling us publicly that he would probably “check out” if he reached the point that he could not be funny or perform anymore. He said this on The Actor’s Studio years before his suicide.
It is vital to check in with each other, tell people why they are worthy to you, send flowers before the funeral, and say how much you need your loved ones. The opportunities I have had to do this are precious memories. One person I sent flowers to was a young mom who was not ill. Within a few years, cancer took her from us. I am glad I showed appreciation when I did.
Forget religious platitudes and mental health stigma such as “They needed to know God better.” If you believe that is true, are you telling people about him? Are you spreading joy and God’s love?
Love, not judge.
