When former President Donald Trump was shot in an assassination attempt this weekend, we saw how political hatred and fear-mongering can stir up desperation and violence. Trump is physically fine and attending the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee.
On whatever side of the political aisle we stand, it is imperative to learn our lesson and stop degrading and dehumanizing people. The cost is too high. The family of the retired fire chief who was killed will say the rhetoric was not worth it. No doubt, other injured parties will also agree.
For peace and quiet nothing beats prayer. St. Paul left us with this insight when he wrote: I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
We have seen the destruction of uncontrolled political passions. Each of us can choose to post a prayer for political leaders and for our nation instead. May God have mercy on us as we turn from anger and hate toward unity in the USA. We can each agree that all people and America matter.
