My Unfailing Motto for Life

By Nancy Virden (c)2023

I was asked recently if I had a “life verse,” a scripture passage that has meant more to me than others. My mind went blank. Several days later, it came to me. Of course! Proverbs 3:5-6!

My son made a glitter version of this verse in Kindergarten Children’s Church a few decades ago. It has graced a prominent shelf since. Countless times the words have passed through my mind.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”

Trust: Faith and trust are the same thing or could be. Faith is more than believing, it is knowing that God will keep His promises and answer my prayers according to what is best. Trust is choosing not to doubt.

Lord: God cannot be mocked. He is the Almighty, the great “I Am”. Either He is Lord of my life or I am only using Him as an emotional crutch with me still in charge.

All your heart: That’s everything I’ve got.

Lean not on your own understanding: Leaning on my biases, or points of view as if they are always perfect will keep me stuck. Where is growth if there is no pursuit of learning? I have found my homemade ideas to be short-sighted too often to allow for leaning on them without asking good questions first.

In all your ways: Once again, that’s everything!

Acknowledge Him: Notice, pay attention to, hear, give credit to. humbly submit to…God

All the above is the condition to the great promise to follow

And He will direct your paths: What a guarantee! I have relied on this a great number of times. I do not have to worry or plot out every detail of my future when God in heaven is guiding me.
