Cutesie drawings and figurines of angels are far from true depictions. According to the Bible, angels are mighty warriors, and some do not look like animals or humans. The Bible is the source of true information, regardless of what spiritually ignorant naysayers insist.
Fictional, pudgy cherubs aside, angels exist in a spiritual world. They are created beings who follow the commands of God. Some protect us, others show us the way, and still others give authentic prophets messages to share. Their job is to honor God through obedience and worship, and to fight back evil forces (such as Satan and demons) in the spiritual realm.
Here are three accounts from my life of close encounters with angels:
1. One night in 1995, a loud noise at our back door caught my attention. Both of my boys, ages 7 and 4, were in bed with me, where we had been reading stories. I thought the noise was at our back screen door, and started praying. To calm my children, I showed no fear and sang an old hymn of praise to God.
Once they were asleep, I went to look out the window. A police car was in our driveway! So, there had been activity and a nefarious person around! I asked God what to do, and was filled with peace. Sleep came easily.
The next morning, my 7-year-old told me of a dream/vision he had the night before. He said a good angel was in our house, fighting back a bad angel from the back door to the bedroom door, and the good angel won.
2. My oldest boy was 2 and standing behind a parked car that was about to go into reverse. I’ve no recall of how he got there, but I was too far away to grab him in time. I yelled STOP! to the driver when a man walked over to my son, picked him up, and gave him to me. We were in a store parking lot, and I did not see him leave or go into the store.
3. I was on a new stretch of freeway when the exit went to the left instead of the right. This is unusual in my city. Traveling too fast, I gripped the turn. A car was stopped in front of me at the end of the exit ramp. I cried out, “Jesus!” and my car stopped in a few feet. Going from 60- 0 in 20 feet without skid marks, I believe, was the act of angels.
A Different Kind of Being
Ezekiel described some angels called “Cherubim” in his book, Ezekiel. He says the following about a certain type of angel he saw in a vision:
I looked, and each of the four cherubim had a wheel beside him, and the wheels sparkled like beryl. All four wheels looked alike and were made the same; each wheel had a second wheel turning crosswise within it. The cherubim could move in any of the four directions they faced, without turning as they moved. They went straight in the direction they faced, never turning aside. Both the cherubim and the wheels were covered with eyes. The cherubim had eyes all over their bodies, including their hands, their backs, and their wings. I heard someone refer to the wheels as “the whirling wheels.” Each of the four cherubim had four faces: the first was the face of an ox, the second was a human face, the third was the face of a lion, and the fourth was the face of an eagle. Ezekiel 10:9-14
Wow! Did you see that coming? Angels are not deities; they are ministering servants to help those who believe on Jesus for salvation and obey him. We must never worship or pray to angels. There is but One True God.

Today’s Helpful Word
Hebrews 1:5-7
For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.”
God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.”
And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.”
Regarding the angels, he says, “He sends his angels like the winds, his servants like flames of fire.”
