By Nancy Virden (c)2023
As of a few minutes ago, I am an officially trained Mental Health Coach! The title on my business cards will include “…and Spiritual Mentor”. This new career will give me opportunities to meet clients, assess their mental health goals, and support them in reaching said goals by building on Christian and biblical principles as well as science.
What Mental Health Coaching Is: I can help a client by listening carefully, and non-judgementally engaging them in discovering ways to achieve the progress they want. Once goals are set, I will provide practical and accountability support, for mild-moderate mental health concerns. Most situations will involve one – three months of mental health coaching.
What Mental Health Coaching Is Not: This is not therapy. Therapy is long-term and is done by a licensed professional with at least a master’s degree in the mental health counseling field. A mental health coach cannot diagnose a client’s mental health condition or recommend medications. A Mental Health Coach will refer moderate to severe cases to higher levels of care although if a client wishes to retain the coach, this can be done in tandem with higher levels of care.
What is a Spiritual Mentor? I will take any client, with or without a mental health concern, who is interested in discovering spiritual truth (biblical truth) or who wants to know how to apply the teachings of Christ to their daily experience. This type of mentoring can be longer-term.
Groups: I will facilitate support groups with the idea in mind of an end date and a specific range of goals (such as depression or empty-nesters, etc.).
If you are interested in mental health coaching and/or spiritual mentoring, please contact me at NancyVirden.hope@gmail.com. Please write coaching in the subject line. (I will be creating a page on this website with details soon.)
